An Introduction to Reduction Linocut Printmaking Workshop:

Reduction linocut printmaking is the art of using a single block of lino to create an image built in layers of colour. With time and ambition, some of the most complex reduction linocuts can have in excess of 40 layers!

On this introductory workshop, you will try your hand at creating a simple two (or 3!) layer linocut, with the sea as our muse. Working with 10 x 15cm blocks, it will be possible to try printing postcards as well as on beautiful Hosho paper. You will learn how to print successfully without a press, and master the art of registration (lining up the layers of colour).

Suitable for those with a little experience in relief printmaking as well as absolute beginners.

Please prepare an image of a seascape that can be simplified into white and two colours, and fit on a 10 x 15cm lino block.

About the Tutor:

Lisa Takahashi is a printmaker and regular workshop facilitator with over 10 years’ experience. She is a regular guest tutor at Spike Print Studio in Bristol and Double Elephant Print Workshop in Exeter. In 2025, she set up her own print studio and workshop space, Isle Print Studio, on the Somerset Levels. Lisa’s approach is to prioritise experimentation with the medium over technical precision – believing that this helps each individual to find their own unique voice in their work.
