The Hay Gallery provides the perfect backdrop for this three artists exhibition in May, featuring works inspired by the natural landscape, horses and dogs. A lovely combination of photographic works, paintings and sculptures will be on show by local artists; Photographer – James Wakefield, Photographer – Kit Williams and Sculptor – Frances Margaret.

Despite always having had a keen interest in photography and taking photos, it wasn’t until 2019 when a commissioned opportunity to take the photographs for a new floristry book, that James’s passion was reignited. Although initially challenging, and a world away from his preferred subject of the great outdoors, photographing flowers brought James back in touch with his camera.
As a keen walker, it wasn’t long before every outdoors adventure with his family included a camera in hand. Having always loved the peace and tranquility of being in nature it was time to start capturing the landscapes around him; rising early to capture the perfect shot of a misty valley or to wait for the light to change at dusk.
James continues to draw upon and learn from the wider photographic community and is constantly inspired by photographers such as; Nigel Danson, Mads Peter Iversen and Thomas Heaton, who share their passion and knowledge so generously. He hopes to continue to develop his own signature style that is very much focused on creating clarity and emotion in a visual story.
Always an admirer of photographers and lover of photography as a creative medium, Kit took up photography in earnest after she retired. She describes herself as a semi-pro having been self taught over many year of dedication and experimentation.
Kit is happiest when outside in the countryside, capturing action shots of dogs and another animals. Her chosen subject matter is a constant source of inspiration and she has continued success selling her fabulous photography.
Although dogs remain her main subject, her love of the great outdoors and her genuine passion for photography, leads her to photograph other subjects as you will see in the collection exhibited at Sea View Art Barn.
Kit shoots on a Canon 5D Mark IV, using mostly her trusty 70-200mm Canon lens. She also uses Adobe Lightroom for some digital editing and, as the learning curve never plateaus, she is currently in the early stages of learning to use Adobe Photoshop.
Frances is best known for her stunning horse sculptures, many of which have been commissioned and purchased over the years by members of the horsey fraternity, including the renowned olympic rider, Mary King.
However she has also worked figuratively and the very striking life size bronze ‘Pilot’ at Exeter Airport is testament to this. Commissioned in 2011 and unveiled in 2012, Frances describes this commission as one of the most meaningful, as her family had close connections with the airfield during the war.
Since retiring (semi-retiring), Frances has expanded her creative talents to painting and she is pleased to be showing some of her vibrant landscapes and more expressive works alongside her horse sculptures.
